Carte Blanche XVI: Caruso St John Architects

The end of the beginning or the beginning of the end, and is progress even possible in architecture?

«Since 1990 we have been working away, making designs that were small scale and intimate to begin with, and which gradually became bigger and more public as our capacity to understand things grew. If you stick around for long enough, people hear about you and opportunities come your way. In the early days, each project brought with it a whole solar system of knowledge, and even today, learning new things about architecture and how to work effectively with other people is a strong motivation to keep going. At the beginning our projects were a bit more abstract, although we really hated abstraction. Then we became more confident, and a little bored (of good taste) and were able to incorporate more of the history of architecture into the work.

Nowadays, we are getting more abstract again. Although the work undoubtably holds together, is it getting better or more relevant, is progress even possible in architecture? This exhibition of our work from the last twenty years invites you to help answer this question.»
